New York has more Coronavirus Cases than all Countries except Spain

The State of New York is USA’s fourth largest state by population, with about 19.454 million people (5.9% of USA’s population), roughly the same population as the Eastern European country Romania, the sixth most populous nation in the EU. NY is the 27th largest American state by geographical area, with just 1.43% of the country’s area.

New York State now has 140,078 Coronavirus cases, which is more than 207 countries which have reported COVID-19 cases. Only Spain with 141,942 cases has more. The death count stands at 5,558, which is higher than the death count of all countries except Italy, Spain, France, and UK.

Combined with the two neighbouring states of New Jersey and Connecticut (the three including New York are commonly referred to as the “Tri-state Area”), there are over 192,275 cases, 35.5% more than Spain, the country with the second highest number of cases after the USA. The combined death count of the Tri-state Area is 7,067, which is lower than only three countries outside of the US (Italy, Spain, and France).

New York City (not the capital of the state), USA’s largest city and the world’s 38th largest, has a population of over 8.622 million people. NYC alone has over 77,000 cases, which is just less than six countries. In other words, if New York City were a country, it would be No.7 in terms of most number of cases.

Almost 20% of the approx. 36,000 uniformed officers of New York Police Department (NYPD) are absent from work due to illness, up from 12% on March 28. More than 2,000 have tested positive for Coronavirus and 12 officers have died, as per CNN.

USA has 395,857 Coronavirus cases, which is more than the combined total cases in the next three countries (Spain, Italy and Germany).

It is surprising that the world’s most advanced country, which spends 16.9% of GDP as public expenditure on health (by far the highest in the world), not only has the highest absolute number of cases, but is No.8 in terms of “Incidence Rate“. Despite such a high expenditure on healthcare, America has only tested 5,962 people per million residents, compared to 18,915 in Switzerland, 18,187 (est.) in Spain, 16,631 (est.) in Germany, 12,868 in Austria, 12,328 in Australia, 11,920 in Italy, and 9,318 per million in South Korea.
