64% of Indians want Government to Save Lives Rather Than Jobs

I have been conducting Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 116 days and have written 182 research-based blog posts on COVID-19 in these 116 days.

Though strictly, this is not my study, I am still going to analyze it.

Statista, a leading provider of market and consumer data, which has 12 million visits per month, has produced this graphic, mentioning global communications and PR firm Edelman as the source.

It is not clear who conducted the survey of 13,200 respondents in 11 nations. Though an average of 1,200 respondents is not that large, especially for a country of 1380.31 million people like India, usually surveys of this kind are known as ‘dipstick surveys’.

As per the survey, 64% (almost one out of three) Indians believe that saving lives is more important, even if it means more economic damage and slower economic recovery. I am not sure if PM Narendra Modi or anyone in his government has seen the data.

As evident from the graph, Japan leads the 8 nations in the graphic with more than three out of four people supporting the hypothesis that saving lives is more important than saving the economy, with UK, France, Germany and USA showing higher numbers for this hypothesis than India. South Korea is at par with India. Only China is below India.

India is in the middle of implementing its “Unlock 2.0” strategy, and cases continue to climb (read my two latest posts — links are given below) and we must not be careless. In fact, Modi referred to this in his last televised address to the nation on June 30.

USA and Brazil are suffering massively due to the carelessness of their national and state political leaders. India must not repeat the mistake.
