India Overtakes Russia; is now World No.3 in Covid-19 Cases

I have been conducting Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 116 days and have written 181 research-based blog posts on COVID-19 in these 116 days.

India has crossed Russia to become the world’s third most Covid-infected country. Russia is now down to the No.4 position. While India is at 687,943 (almost 6.88 lakh) cases with Maharashtra (India’s most Covid-infected state) still to report today’s numbers, Russia (which only reports national numbers once a day) is at 681,251 cases.

On May 24, Brazil had overtaken Russia, which earlier held the No.2 position. Russia has been at the No.3 position for 41 days. Russia had 344,481 cases and the No.3 position on May 24, while India had 138,536 cases and the No.11 position, a huge gap. In 41 days since then, while India averaged 13,058 cases per day, while Russia averaged 8,050 cases.

India recorded its highest-ever count of 24,015 new Covid-19 cases yesterday (July 4), the first time the country breached the 24,000-mark. It had breached the 22,000-mark on Friday July 3 and the 21,000 mark on Thursday July 2. Yesterday, India also had its highest death count of 610.

In the past 10 days, while India has averaged 20,093 cases per day (almost 10.8% of the world’s total), Russia has averaged only 6,763 cases per day.

India’s high case count is a direct result of higher testing. India conducted an average of 222,828 tests per day (TPD) in these 10 days, compared with 178,665 TPD in the previous 10 days (June 15-24) and 138,775 TPD in the 10 day period (June 5-14) prior to that.

However, Russia continues to be more aggressive in its testing. It has conducted 326,550 TPD in the past 10 days and has now tested more than 14.4% of its population, which is more than 20 times the intensity of India, which has tested just a little over 0.7%.

Barring Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mexico, Indonesia and Egypt, all other 24 countries in the Top 30 (in number of cases) have tested more of their population than India. The UK is at the top, having tested 15.23% of its population. Seven countries (including UK) have tested over 10% of their population, 9 others have tested over 5% and yet another 6 countries have tested over 1%.

With No.1 USA at average 47,100 cases per day and No.2 Brazil at average 38,590 cases per day still recording much higher cases than India in the past 10 days, India is unlikely to overtake them in the foreseeable future, if ever.
