India Crosses 700,000 (7 lakh) Cases

I have been conducting Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 117 days and have written 184 research-based blog posts on COVID-19 in these 117 days.

India is the 3rd country in the world to cross 700,000 (7 lakh) COVID-19 cases.

It was the 11th country to cross 100,000 (1 lakh) cases, 7th to cross 200,000 cases, and 4th to cross 300,000, 400,000, 500,000 and 600,000 (6 lakh) cases.

It took 109 days for India to cross the first 100,000 (1 lakh) cases, 15 days to cross 200,000 cases, 10 days to cross 300,000 cases, 8 days to cross 400,000 cases, 6 days to cross 500,000 cases, 5 days to cross 600,000 cases and again 5 days to cross 700,000 (7 lakh) cases.

In the last 11 days, India has accounted for more than 11% of total worldwide cases and 9.47% of total deaths.

The Greater Mumbai Metropolitan Region has reported over 116,700 Covid cases, of which 84,524 are from Mumbai city alone. The National Capital Region (sometimes also referred to as Greater Delhi) has reported over 116,300 cases, of which 99,444 are from Delhi city (state) alone. Greater Chennai has reported over 75,200 cases.

About 60.8% of cases in India have recovered, which is higher than the global recovery rate of 56.54%. India’s Fatality Rate (percentage of deaths) at 2.82% is much lower than the global Fatality Rate of 4.64%.

India has only tested 0.7224% of its population. The two countries with more cases than India have done far more testing — USA has tested about 11.36% of its population, or about 15.7 times India’s testing rate; and Brazil has tested about 1.825% of its population, or about 2.5 times India’s testing rate.

Excluding India, the Top 29 countries in number of cases have tested average 5.565% of their population, which is 7.7 times that of India.

Only Pakistan (0.643%), Bangladesh (0.516%), Mexico (0.497%), Indonesia (0.335%) and Egypt (0.138%) have tested lesser percentages of their population than India.

Despite ramping up testing by a healthy 38.7% in the last 2 weeks compared to the previous 2 weeks, India still needs to ramp us testing even more to catch up with MOST of the rest of the world. Do we need to compare India with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mexico, Indonesia and Egypt?

Are PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan —as well as CMs of states — conscious of the above testing data comparisons?
