What Does This World Map Show Us?

I have been conducting Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 117 days and have written 183 research-based blog posts on COVID-19 in these 117 days.

The data in this map (courtesy mapchart.net) pertains to 1:30 am UTC, and includes 45 countries which have reported a minimum of 30,000 Covid cases. These 45 countries put together comprise almost 93.8% of all cases worldwide.

Of the 45 countries, only one — Qatar — had over 35,000 Cases per Million residents (CPMs). Let’s call this Group 1. It is probably not even visible on the map, being so small, but if you look closely, it is between Saudi Arabia in light orange and Iran in yellow.

The next 6 (Group 2), with between 8,840 and 15,458 CPM, are in red, and include — in order of highest to lowest CPMs — Chile, Kuwait, Peru, Oman, USA and Panama.

Thus, of the 7 countries with the highest CPMs, 3 each are in Central & South America and the Middle East, with USA being the only exception.

Next come 6 countries (Group 3) in dark orange, with between 6,017 and 7,657 CPMs, and include — in order of highest to lowest CPMs — Singapore, Brazil, Sweden, Belarus, Spain and Saudi Arabia.

The next 6 countries (Group 4), with between 3,996 and 5,341 CPMs, are in light orange colour, and include Belgium, UAE, Russia, Portugal, UK and Italy.

The next 10 countries in yellow (Group 5), with between 2,512 and 3,728 CPMs, are Switzerland, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, South Africa, Bolivia, Netherlands, Iran, Canada, France and Kazakhstan.

Thus, of the 29 countries with the highest CPMs, 11 are in Europe, 7 in Central & South America and 6 in the Middle East. The others include USA, Singapore, South Africa, Canada and Kazakhstan.

The next 6 countries (Group 6) in blue, with between 1,503 and 2,439 CPMs, are Turkey, Germany, Colombia, Mexico, Argentina and Iraq.

Next come 5 countries (Group 7) in a bluish-green colour, with between 735 and 1,109 CPMs. These are — in order of highest to lowest CPMs — Ukraine, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Poland, Afghanistan and Egypt.

The next 4 countries in green (Group 8), with 233–160 CPMs, are India, Philippines and Indonesia.

Finally comes the great nation China, which has miraculously only reported 58 CPMs (as if anyone believes them. Even though I wanted to give China the black colour, I have given it dark green so that the map doesn’t look bad with such a large black patch.

Does the disease have a regional bias? Or does the answer lie in the Testing Rate?

The 12 countries which have tested a minimum of 9.3% of their population are all in Groups 1 to 4. Similarly, 12 of the 15 countries which have tested less than 1.7% of their population are in Groups 6 to 8.

I leave you to draw your own conclusions.

India (506) has the 4th lowest CPMs of these 45 countries, after Philippines (404), Indonesia (233) and China (58) and the 7th lowest testing rate.

Only 5 countries — Mexico, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Egypt — have higher CPMs but lower testing rate than India.
