I have been conducting Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 125 days and have written 194 research-based blog posts on COVID-19 in these 125 days.
India conducted 320,161 Covid-19 tests yesterday (July 14), bettering its previous highest 286,247 tests on Monday (July 13) by 11.84%. More than 53% of India’s total 12.413 million (1.24 crore) tests have been done in the last 30 days.
Despite ramping up testing by 30.77% in the last 2 weeks (average 256,149 tests per day) compared to the previous 2 weeks (average 195,881 tests per day), India still needs to ramp us testing even more to catch up with MOST of the rest of the world.
When you look at testing in the context of percentage of population tested, India (0.9%) is far behind UK (18.1%), Russia (16.3%), USA (13.3%) and China (6.28%).
Of the tp 30 countries in number of cases, 7 have tested over 10% of their population, with UK highest at 18.1%. Half (15 countries) have tested over 5% of their population and as many as 21 have tested more than double of India’s percentage.
Only Pakistan (0.74%) which has a 25.9% lower per-capita GDP than India, Bangladesh (0.6%) which has a 21% lower per-capita GDP than India, Mexico (0.6%), Indonesia (0.4%) and Egypt (0.14%) have tested lesser of their population than India.
Several other countries with much lower per-capita GDPs than India have also tested higher percentages of their populations. Here are three examples:
Ghana (37% lower per capita GDP than India) has tested 1.19 times of its population compared with India. At Ghana’s testing level, India would have more than 1.116 million (11.16 lakh) cases.
Nepal (62% lower per capita GDP than India) has tested 2.33 times of its population compared with India. At Nepal’s testing level, India would have almost 2.2 million (22 lakh) cases and ranked higher than Brazil — the current world No.2 in number of cases.
Uzbekistan (4% lower per capita GDP) has tested 4.58 times of its population compared with India. At Uzbekistan’s testing level, India would have almost 4.31 million (43.1 lakh) cases, the highest in the world.
Do we really need to compare the world’s 5th largest economy (India) with the 40th largest (Pakistan) or the 43rd largest (Bangladesh) or the 74th largest (Ghana) or the 83rd largest (Uzbekistan) or the 103rd largest (Nepal)? Is this the real state of affairs in a country which wants to become a $5 trillion economy in the next 5 years?
Are PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan —as well as CMs of states — conscious of the above testing data comparisons?
OTHER COVID-19 HEADLINES:
- Amongst the Top 30 countries in number of cases, Peru (1.01%) became the fourth country after Qatar (3.74%), Chile (1.67%) and USA (1.07%) to have over 1% of its population infected with the disease
- Four (Brazil, Peru, Chile and Mexico) of the Top 30 countries are now from Central & South America
- USA has crossed 3.5 million (35 lakh) cases
- Mexico became the seventh country to cross 300,000 (3 lakh) cases
- South Africa overtook UK to reach the No.9 rank in cases
(it was at No. 17 just 13 days ago) - Germany became the 16th country to cross 200,000 cases
- Egypt and Iran became the 23rd and 24th countries to cross China in cases — yes, the world’s most populous country is now at No.25 in terms of Covid cases
- Kazakhstan entered the Top 30 by overtaking Belgium — there are only 8 European countries in the Top 30 now
- Chile became the 15th country to cross 7,000 deaths
