India finally Tests 1% of its Population — Do you think it is enough?

I have been conducting Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 131 days and have written 199 research-based blog posts on COVID-19 in these 131 days.

India has conducted 14.048 million (over 1.4 core) Covid tests. Assuming one test per person — although this is unlikely to be the case as positive patients are tested again to confirm a negative result and some negative cases are also tested again — India has now tested 1.02% of its population.

However, I am ignoring the duplicate testing for India as well as for other countries, as such precise data is not available. Most available data is only for tests conducted, and not for people tested.

Almost 53% of India’s total tests have been done in the last 30 days. Despite ramping up testing by 35% in the last 2 weeks (average 2,91,303 tests per day) compared to the previous 2 weeks (average 2,15,655 tests per day), India still needs to ramp us testing even more to catch up with MOST of the rest of the world.

When you look at tests conducted as a percentage of population, India (1.02%) is far behind UK (19.58%), Russia (17.3%), USA (14.6%) and China (6.28%).

Of the Top 30 countries in number of cases, 3 are over 15% of their population (or over 15 times that of India), with UK highest at 19.58%; 6 countries are over 10%; 10 are over 7.5%; 15 are over 5%; and as many as 20 countries are more than double of India’s percentage. The 29 countries excluding India have an average testing rate of 6.22% of their population, or 6.12 times that of India’s.

Of these 29 countries, only 5 countries have tested lesser than India: Pakistan (0.79%) which has a 25.9% lower per-capita GDP than India, Mexico (0.64%), Bangladesh (0.63%) which has a 21% lower per-capita GDP than India, Indonesia (0.45%) and Egypt (0.14%).

Several other countries with much lower per-capita GDPs than India have also tested higher percentages of their populations. Here are two examples:

Nepal (62% lower per capita GDP than India) has tested 2.13 times of its population compared with India. At Nepal’s testing level, India would have 2.461 million (24.61 lakh) cases and ranked higher than Brazil — the current world No.2 in number of cases.

Uzbekistan (4% lower per capita GDP than India) has tested 4.04 times of its population compared with India. At Uzbekistan’s testing level, India would have almost 4.7 million (47 lakh) cases, the highest in the world.

Do we really need to compare the world’s 5th largest economy (India) with the 40th largest (Pakistan) or the 43rd largest (Bangladesh) or the 83rd largest (Uzbekistan) or the 103rd largest (Nepal)? Is this the real state of affairs in a country which wants to become a $5 trillion economy in the next 5 years?

Are PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan —as well as CMs of states — conscious of the above testing data comparisons?
