I have been conducting Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 91 days and have written 147 research-based blog posts on COVID-19 in these 91 days.
On an average, India has only conducted 3,780 Tests per Million residents (TPM), which is just 15% of the average 26,741 TPM of the 27 countries (excluding China) which have reported a minimum of 40,000 Covid cases.
So, let’s look at which Indian states and Union Territories (UTs) are the laggards, and which are dragging India so far behind.
Amongst the 18 larger states (in blue colour in the Table), Andhra Pradesh has conducted the highest number at 9,252 TPMs, 2.45 times higher than India’s national average. Even Tamil Nadu is at more than double the national average. Rajasthan, Karnataka, Haryana, Maharashtra, Punjab, and Assam have not done too badly. Gujarat and Odisha are just slightly above the national average, while Kerala is just 3% below.
At the bottom is Telangana, which has not reported testing data since May 16 (26 days), for reasons best known to the state government. Bihar is 77% below the national average, UP is 55% below, Jharkhand 35% below, MP 29% below, West Bengal 21% below, and Chhattisgarh 15% below the national average. Until the largest amongst them — UP, Bihar, West Bengal and MP — do not ramp up testing, there is no way for India to catch up with the rest of the world.
Although their numbers will make a lesser difference to the national average, amongst the mid-sized states (in green colour in the Table), Uttarakhand and Meghalaya have to ramp up their testing.
Amongst the smaller states and UTs (in yellow colour in the Table), Nagaland and Mizoram are both way below the national average.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi needs to quickly give up a wake up call to Nitish Kumar, Yogi Adityanath, Hemant Soren, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Mamata Banerjee (if she will listen to him), Bhupesh Baghel, Trivendra Singh Rawat, and Conrad Sangma.
