I have been conducting Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 132 days and have written 203 research-based blog posts on COVID-19 in these 132 days.
India has become the third country in the world (after the USA and Brazil) to cross 1.2 million (12 lakh) COVID-19 cases.
It was the eleventh country to cross 1 lakh cases, seventh to cross 2 lakh cases, fourth to cross 3 lakh, 4 lakh, 5 lakh and 6 lakh cases and the third to cross 7 lakh, 8 lakh, 9 lakh, 10 lakh and 11 lakh cases.
It took 109 days for India to cross the first 1 lakh cases, 15 days to cross 2 lakh, 10 days to cross 3 lakh, 8 days to cross 4 lakh, 6 days to cross 5 lakh, 5 days each to cross 6 lakh and 7 lakh, 4 days each to cross 8 lakh and 9 lakh, and 3 days each to cross 10 lakh, 11 lakh and 12 lakh (1.2 million) cases.
In the last 14 days, India has recorded 32,186 average daily cases and accounted for 14.4% of total worldwide cases, compared to 11.9% just six days ago.
In the previous 14 days, India averaged 20,526 daily cases, which means India has seen a 56.8% growth in cases in the last two weeks compared to the previous two weeks.
In the last 7 days, India has recorded 36,657 average daily cases which accounted for 15.8% of total worldwide cases, compared to 13.2% just six days ago.
India has 17.7% of the world’s population.
The Greater Mumbai Metropolitan Region has reported over 1.65 lakh Covid cases, of which 1,03,368 are from Mumbai city alone. The National Capital Region (sometimes also referred to as Greater Delhi) has reported over 1.5 lakh cases, of which 126,323 are from Delhi city (state) alone. Greater Chennai has reported over 98,000 cases.
About 63.2% of cases in India have recovered, which is higher than the global recovery rate of 60.5%. India’s Fatality Rate (percentage of deaths) at 2.4% is much lower than the global Fatality Rate of 4.1%.
India has only conducted 10,665 Tests per Million (TPM). The two countries with more cases than India have done far more testing — USA has done 150,758 TPM or ~14.1 times India’s testing rate; and Brazil has done 23,096 TPM or ~2.2 times India’s testing rate. The UK has done 199,880 TPM.
Excluding India, the Top 29 countries in terms of number of cases have conducted an average of 63,330 TPM, or ~5.94 times that of India.
Only Pakistan (8,037 TPM), Bangladesh (6,473 TPM), Mexico (6,553 TPM), Indonesia (4,689 TPM) and Egypt (1,377 TPM) have tested lesser than India.
Despite ramping up testing by 36.2% in the last 14 days compared to the previous 14 days, India still needs to ramp us testing even more to catch up with MOST of the rest of the world. Do we really need to compare India with Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mexico, Indonesia and Egypt?
Are PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan —as well as CMs of states — conscious of the above testing data comparisons?

- Amongst the Top 30 Brazil became the fourth country (after Chile, USA and Peru) to cross 10,000 Cases per Million, which means that over 1% of Brazil’s population has contracted the disease.
