India 17th Nation with over 20,000 Covid19 cases; 20th with 600+ deaths

According to covid19india.org, which uses state bulletins and official Twitter handles to update their numbers 4-6 times a day, India has crossed 20,000 COVID-19 cases. Its website is reporting 20,004 cases and 641 deaths as of an hour ago.

India has become the 17th country in the world with 20,000+ cases (it was 24th to cross 5,000 cases, 22nd to cross 10,000 cases and 17th to cross 15,000 cases). The rank in terms of number of deaths is 20, the same it was when we crossed 15,000 cases.

In terms of states, Maharashtra leads with 5,218 cases and 251 deaths, followed by Gujarat with 2,178 cases and 90 deaths, Delhi with 2,156 cases and 47 deaths, Rajasthan with 1,659 cases and 25 deaths, Tamil Nadu with 1,596 cases and 18 deaths, and Madhya Pradesh with 1,552 cases and 80 deaths.

West Bengal, which is bigger than Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh by population (and obviously far bigger than Delhi) seems to be suppressing data, supposedly for political benefits. This has not only been covered extensively by Indian media but now also by international media.

Just 3 days ago, I had written that, at the compounded daily growth rate (CDGR) India has had in the past 7 days, we are likely to cross 20,000 cases by 22 April and 25,000 cases by 24 April. We have crossed the 20,000 milestone one day earlier. We are still most likely to cross 25,000 by 24 April.

While Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government are doing everything they can to prevent the Coronavirus Pandemic from affecting India as much as 25-30 other much worse affected countries (in terms of COVID-positive people as a percentage of population), a fact that has been well recognised by many world leaders several times in the past few weeks, it is a shame that some opposition parties/politicians and their supporters (or those who are not opposition supporters but still hate Modi regardless) continue to make fun of his ideas and initiatives.

One particular madam gave such advice to the PM that even a 12-year-old said was stupid. Her son was so “strategic” in his criticism of the Modi government that he used the word “strategic” as many as 17 times in his 54-minute press conference recently. Another madam is supposedly suppressing numbers from her state.

However, it is good to see that most state Chief Ministers are partnering with Modi and the Government of India to help save our lives, such as agreeing to a 19-day extension to the first 21-day lockdown.
