New York, Singapore, London & Mumbai — A TALE OF FOUR CITIES

Before I begin, let me mention here that I have been doing Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 45 days and have written 109 blog posts on COVID-19 in these 45 days.

New York City is USA’s financial capital. It is also USA’s largest city by population and the world’s 8th or 9th or 11th largest, depending on whose data you trust more. The Greater New York urban area has a population of 21.045 million (as per Demographia), or 20.43 million (as per CityMayors), or 18.819 million (as per ThoughtCo), or 18.804 million (as per Macrotrends). The average population is 19.775 million. Let us assume the rank as 9th largest city in the world.

Greater New York has reported over 167,000 cases so far, which is higher than all but 3 countries. In other words, if Greater New York were a country by itself, it would be No.4 in terms of most cases. The death count is over 15,000, higher than all but 5 countries.

Singapore is Asia’s emerging financial capital. It is also a city-state or country. It is the world’s 63rd or 66th largest city by population, depending on whose data you trust more. Singapore has a population of 5.935 million (as per Macrotrends), or 5.885 million (as per the United Nations), or 5.85 million (as per PopulationPyramid), or 5.24 million (as per CityMayors). The average population is 5.73 million. Let us assume the rank as 64th largest city in the world.

Singapore has reported 15,641 cases so far, which is higher than all but 24 countries. The death count is only 14, which is some sort of miracle in itself.

London is Europe’s financial capital. It is UK’s largest city by population and the world’s 18th or 24th or 28th or 37th largest, depending on whose data you trust more. The Greater London urban area has a population of 14.373 million (as per Eurostat), or 12.875 million (as per Forstall et al), or 10.979 million (as per Demographia), or 10.313 million (as per WorldAtlas). The average population is 12.135 million. Let us assume the rank as 27th largest city in the world.

Greater London has reported 24,090 cases so far, which is higher than all but 19 countries. In other words, if Greater London were a country by itself, it would be No.20 in terms of most cases. The death count is 4,890, higher than all but 9 countries.

Mumbai is India’s financial capital. It is also India’s largest city by population and the world’s 2nd or 5th or 7th or 9th largest, depending on whose data you trust more. The Greater Mumbai urban area has a population of 25.97 million (as per CityMayors), or 23.645 million (as per Demographia), or 20.411 million (as per Macrotrends), or 19.98 million (as per ThoughtCo). The average population is 22.5 million. Let us assume the rank as 6th largest city in the world.

Greater Mumbai has reported 7,526 cases so far, which is higher than all but 42 countries. In other words, if Greater Mumbai were a country by itself, it would be No.43 in terms of most cases. The death count is 284, which is quite low.

So what do the figures above tell us?

In terms of Infection Rate per million residents, New York is at 8,445, followed by Singapore at 2,730, London at 1,985 and finally Mumbai at 334.5. But then, New York has conducted over 44,000 tests per million residents, Singapore over 25,000, London over 12,000, and Mumbai estimated at only about 4,350 tests. As testing in India increases, we will see more realistic data for Greater Mumbai and the whole country.
