The United States of America (USA or US) has touched 1,000,432 Coronavirus cases (compared to 539,942 on April 11), which is 10% higher than the combined total of 910,040 cases in the next 5 countries (Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and UK), and over 32.8% of the world’s total COVID-19 cases (compared to 29.6% on April 11). The death count is 56,285 (compared to 24,062 on April 11), which is over 26.7% of the world’s death count (compared to 21.4% on April 11). USA has just a shade under 4.25% of the world’s population.

The State of New York is USA’s 4th largest state by population, with about 19.454 million people (5.86% of USA’s population), roughly the same population as Romania, the 6th most populous nation in the EU, or that of India’s National Capital territory of Delhi. New York State has reported 297,224 Coronavirus cases, which is over 9.7% of the total cases worldwide, and 29.6% more than Spain, the country with the second highest number of cases after USA. The death count stands at 22,612, which is higher than the death count of all but 3 countries outside of the US (Italy, Spain, and France).

Combined with the 2 neighbouring states of New Jersey and Connecticut (the 3 are commonly referred to as the “Tri-state Area”), 433,681 Coronavirus cases have been reported, 89% more than Spain. It was 50% more on April 11. The combined death count of the Tri-state Area is 30,580, higher than that of any other country.

New York City (not the capital of the state), USA’s largest city and the world’s 38th largest, has a population of about 8.622 million people, roughly the same as the Indian city Hyderabad. NYC alone has reported more than 162,000 cases, which is less than just 3 countries outside the US (Spain, Italy, and France). In other words, if New York City were a country, it would be No.5 in terms of most number of cases.

New Jersey, USA’s 11th largest state with about 8.882 million people (2.68% of USA’s population), roughly the same population as Papua New Guinea (the small island nation located to the North of Australia) has reported 111,188 COVID-19 cases, which is more than all but 6 countries outside the US. The death count stands at 6,044, which is higher than the death count of all but 5 countries outside the US.

Massachusetts, USA’s 15th largest state with about 6.95 million people (2.09% of population), roughly the same population as Bulgaria, has reported 54,938 cases, which is higher than all but 10 countries. The death count of 2,899 is higher than all but 11 countries.

Illinois, USA’s 6th largest state with about 12.672 million people (3.82% of population), roughly the same population as tiny Central African nation of Rwanda, has reported 43,903 cases, which is higher than all but 12 countries. The death count of 1,933 is higher than all but 13 countries.

California, USA’s largest state with about 39.512 million people (11.91% of population), roughly the same population as Afghanistan, has reported 43,784 cases, which is higher than all but 12 countries. The death count of 1,721 is higher than all but 13 countries.

Pennsylvania, USA’s 5th largest state with about 12.802 million people (3.86% of population), also roughly the same population as Rwanda, has reported 42,708 cases, which is higher than all but 12 countries. The death count of 1,823 is higher than all but 13 countries.

Michigan, USA’s 10th largest state with about 9.987 million people (3% of population), roughly the same population as Sweden, has reported 38,210 cases, which is higher than all but 13 countries. The death count of 3,407 is higher than all but 10 countries.

Florida, USA’s 3rd largest state with about 21.478 million people (6.47% of population), roughly the same population as Sri Lanka, has reported 32,138 cases, which is higher than all but 13 countries. The death count of 1,088 is higher than all but 16 countries.

It is surprising that the world’s most advanced country, which spends 16.9% of GDP as public expenditure on health (by far the highest in the world), not only has the highest absolute number of cases, but is No.6 in the world in terms of “Infection Rate” (number of positive cases per million residents).

Despite such a high expenditure on healthcare, America has only tested 16,625 people per million residents, compared to 32,321 in Portugal, 29,028 in Italy, 28,553 in Switzerland, 27,137 in Spain, 26,701 in Germany, 26,079 in Ireland, 20,699 in Russia, and above 18,500 in Canada and Belgium.
