I have been conducting Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 147 days and have written 214 research-based blog posts on COVID-19 in these 147 days.
India has become the third country in the world (after USA and Brazil) to cross 20 lac (2 million) Corona cases. This means that about 1 out of 690 people have tested positive for the disease at some time or the other.
It was the eleventh country to cross 1 lac cases, the seventh to cross 2 lac cases, the fourth to cross 3, 4, 5 and 6 lac cases, and the third to cross 7 lac onwards up to 19 lac cases.
It took 109 days for India to cross the first 1 lac cases, 15 days to cross 2 lac, 10 days to cross 3 lac, 8 days to cross 4 lac, 6 days to cross 5 lac, 5 days each to cross 6 and 7 lac cases, 4 days each to cross 8 and 9 lac cases, 3 days each to cross 10, 11 and 12 lac cases, and 2 days each to cross 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 1, 19 and now 20 lac cases.
In the past 14 days, India reported an average of 51,683 cases per day and accounted for 20.1% of total worldwide cases.
In the previous 14 days, India averaged 33,617 daily cases, which means India has seen a 53.7% growth in cases in the last two weeks compared to the previous two weeks.
In the past seven days, India recorded an average of 54,122 cases per day, which was an even higher 21.2% of worldwide cases. India has 17.7% of the world’s population.
The Greater Mumbai Metropolitan Region has reported over 1.98 lac Covid cases, of which 1.2 lac are from Mumbai city alone. The National Capital Region (sometimes also referred to as Greater Delhi) has reported over 1.74 lac cases, of which 1.34 lac are from Delhi city (state) alone. Greater Chennai has reported over 1.2 lac cases.
About 67.7% of cases in India have recovered, which is slightly higher than the global recovery rate of 64.2%. India’s Fatality Rate (percentage of deaths) at 2.06% is much lower than the global Fatality Rate of 3.74%. India’s Fatality Rate was 2.83% on 1 June and the world’s was 5.95%.
India has only conducted 16,035 Tests per Million (TPM). The two countries with more cases than India have done far more testing — USA has done 1,88,362 TPM or ~11.7 times India’s testing rate; and Brazil has done 62,664 TPM or ~3.9 times India’s testing rate. The UK has done 2,53,387 TPM and Russia 2,03,623 TPM.
Excluding India, the Top 29 countries in terms of number of cases have conducted an average of 74,622 TPM, or ~4.65 times that of India.
Only eight countries — Bolivia, Philippines, Ecuador, Pakistan, Mexico, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Egypt — have tested lesser than India.
Despite ramping up testing by 64.5% in the last 15 days compared to the previous 15 days and by a whopping 115.3% in the last 30 days compared to the previous 30 days, India needs to ramp us testing even further to catch up with MOST of the rest of the world, as we should not have to compare India with countries such as Philippines, Bolivia, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

- The world crossed 19 million (1.9 crore) cases.
- USA crossed 4.979 million (49.79 lac) cases and is likely to cross 5 million cases in the next few hours.
- South Africa became the fifth country to cross 500,000 cases.
- Mexico became the sixth country to cross 450,000 cases.
- Spain became the ninth country to cross 350,000 cases.
- Colombia overtook UK and Iran to reach the No.10 rank in cases. The Top 10 now have 5 countries from Central & South America (Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Chile and Colombia), 2 from Europe (Russia and Spain), USA, India and South Africa.
- Saudi Arabia overtook Pakistan to reach the No.13 rank in cases.
- Bangladesh overtook Italy to reach the No.15 rank in cases.
- Argentina overtook France and Germany to reach the No.18 rank in cases.
- There have been several changes in the 22nd to 30th rank. Philippines is now No.22, Indonesia 23, Canada 24, Qatar 2, Kazakhstan 26, Egypt 27, Ecuador 28, Bolivia (a new entrant into the Top 30) at No.29 and China at No.30. Yes, incredibly, the one and only China is now at the No.30 rank in cases!!!
- Peru became the ninth country to cross 20,000 deaths.
- Iraq became the 24th country to cross 5,000 deaths.
