India Conducts over 10 lakh (1 million) Coronavirus Tests in a Day

I have been conducting Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 163 days and have written 218 research-based blog posts on COVID-19 in these 163 days.

Sorry for not being able to post a single article in these past 15 days, as I have been more or less bedridden due to a slipped disc.

India conducted 10,23,836 Covid19 tests yesterday — crossing 10 lac tests in a day for the first time.

The country conducted an average of 7,93,136 tests per day (TPD) in the last two weeks, which is 47.3% higher than the 5,38,436 TPD in the previous two weeks. If one compares the last 31 days against the previous 31 days, the testing rate has improved by almost 150%, which is a significant achievement. More than 40% of India’s 34.49 lac tests have been done in just the last 19 days.

India has now conducted 24,959 tests per million residents (TPM), which is higher than eight of the Top 30 countries with most cases. Three weeks ago, India’s testing rate was higher than only five of the Top 30. The other 29 countries have conducted an average of 100,807 TPM, or 4.04 times that of India. Just one month ago, this figure was 5.94 times that of India.

My heartiest congratulations to PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah (who took a personal interest in improving India’s testing rate), Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan — as well as the CMs of most states — for the significant improvement in testing.

The most significant improvement in testing in the past one month took place in Bihar, followed by Arunachal Pradesh, Telangana (after High Court intervention), Gujarat, Odisha, Assam, and UP. Though the least improvement was in J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Delhi; J&K, Goa and Delhi already had good testing rates.

Madhya Pradesh has the lowest testing rate of 13,283 TPM (53% of the national average), followed by Jharkhand (56%), West Bengal (60%), Chhattisgarh (64%), and UP and Bihar (72% each). As Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has shown the way with a huge 473% increase in testing in one month, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Hemant Soren, Mamata Banerjee, Bhupesh Baghel and Yogi Adityanath need to get their act together.
