I have been conducting Data Analytics Studies on the Coronavirus Pandemic for 141 days and have written 212 research-based blog posts on COVID-19 in these 141 days.
Yesterday (30 July), India reported its highest-ever single-day tally of 54,966 Coronavirus cases, beating the previous high of 52,249 on the day before (29 July). India also reported 783 new deaths, which was the second-highest daily tally after 1,130 deaths on 22 July.
India’s 54,966 cases represented 19.61% of total cases worldwide.
In the past 7 days, India recorded an average of 50,174 cases/day, or 19.37% of total worldwide cases. This was 7.86% from 1 to 7 June, 11.42% from 1 to 7 July, and 16.68% from 17 to 23 July. So India’s share of global cases is continuously rising.
India has 17.7% of the world’s population.

Maharashtra now has a case count of almost 4.12 lakh cases, Tamil Nadu almost 2.4 lakh, Delhi over 1.34 lakh, Andhra Pradesh over 1.3 lakh and Karnataka over 1.18 lakh cases. Uttar Pradesh is likely to cross 1 lakh cases in 6 days.
India has only conducted 13,606 Tests per Million (TPM). The two countries with more cases than India have done far more testing — USA has done 1,73,695 TPM or ~12.8 times India’s testing rate; and Brazil has done 59,249 TPM or ~4.4 times India’s testing rate. The UK has done 2,31,741 TPM and Russia 1,88,911 TPM.
Excluding India, the Top 29 countries in terms of number of cases have conducted an average of 70,712 TPM, or ~5.2 times that of India. Only 7 countries — Ecuador, Philippines, Pakistan, Mexico, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Egypt — have tested lesser than India.
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare tweeted about an hour back that India has done more than 6 lakh tests in the past 24 hours and the objective is to raise the testing capacity to 10 lakhs tests per day in the medium term. With an average Positivity Rate (positive tests as a percentage of total tests) of 11.7% in the past 14 days, this means that India will record 1,17,000 cases per day when we reach that milestone.
I sincerely hope that PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan — as well as CMs of states — have some strategies in place to deal with the growing Covid cases that we will keep on seeing for the foreseeable future.

- Iraq overtook Canada to reach the No.21 rank in cases.
- Philippines overtook Kazakhstan to reach the No.26 rank in cases.
- Ecuador overtook China to reach the No.28 rank in cases. Yes, incredibly, the one and only China is now at the No.29 rank in cases!!!
- Mexico became the fourth country to cross 45,000 deaths.
- India became the sixth country to cross 35,000 deaths.
